She writes “I’ve had a passion for working with kids since as long as I can remember. I started out babysitting and working in daycares in high school and eventually decided to become a teacher. I got a degree in English with a minor in Biology from Nipissing University and then completed my Bachelor of Education there as well. While I was in teacher’s college I decided that I’d like to work with kids with special needs as a career. I love the look on a child’s face when he or she has finally mastered a skill or understood a concept! Oh yes, and did I mention that I myself am on the Autism Spectrum? I have Asperger’s, and as a result I am able to bring some unique insights into my work. I love working with the Recreational Respite team and making a difference in the lives of children!”

Working for Recreational Respite is truly a rewarding experience! I enjoy seeing my clients progress and learn new skills, or enjoy activities that they were able to do independently in the past. My 1:1 work with my clients develops self-esteem and confidence, while positively impacting their physical and cognitive abilities. I enjoy working with those who have developmental disabilities. My experience was varied and somewhat limiting to the provisions of the program designs we could create. The team at Recreational Respite are so nurturing, creative, educational and supportive and they allow us to create programs with far more innovation that includes the community and their programs my clients live in. I love this approach and I enjoy my work so much because of it! … Jennifer
